Working on the R+D side of an OEM (Nissan) the declining sales of diesels is having a huge impact on production volumes, currently many OEM's can't produce enough petrol or hybrid power units to satisfy demand meaning production gets throttled back.
A lot of the industry is now suffering because of the early 2000's incentivisation of developing more clean diesel engines meant that they hedged heavily on diesel engines in Europe only to find them as good as obsolete in 2018.
Times they are a changing in the automotive world and it's interesting seeing EV's and hybrids suddenly gaining the momentum they need to hit popularity.
