Is that view looking towards the top of Cowick Street, taken from the bottom of Fore Street?
From about where Renslade house is now.(Fore St ends at West Street, you then have Bridge St that took you across to St Thomas)

Ah, the delightful Renslade House. What a beautiful building to greet visitors to a Cathedral city.

That, the City council building and Bobbys/Debenhams/John Lewis thingy are works of art!:$

Don't forget Rennes House, where they filmed the first Die Hard.

Holy sh*t. Is this really what it used to look like before the demolition and building of Exe Bridges?
Picture is a bit deceptive Willy. Very intricate ironwork on that old bridge, always seemed to be rusty, lots of flaking green and gold paint.

The new concrete ones are far worse, granted.

Re: Sainsburys St Thomas

Just imagine the traffic coming from Alphington St, Cowick St and Okehampton St trying to cross the bridge with only one lane into town!

What happened at the time Elgin? Were people happy to see the old buildings and bridge torn down? That hexagonal building looks great!

True but there must have been other ways around this. Also, it might encourage more people to use buses and the park and ride!

Unfortunately, at the time, the council based their city planning on a desire to bring cars into the city.

Hard to believe, but I'm not quite that old Willy, only a nipper at that time so don't remember the reaction.

I'd guess the two bridges would have definitely helped with traffic flow, even then, so would have been popular initially at least.
