Just in the last few minutes, every time I read a thread, it still remains marked as "unread" - a little bug just crept in or have I done something stupid?

Yeah, try clearing your cookies. Right now the read/unread posts uses cookies to determine and it makes certain assumptions too. Often if I logout / login elsewhere it says I've read everything which I haven't.

VB does have the option to use the database to record read/unread posts instead so I might try that out in the future as then it should work wherever you login from and be very accurate. Puts more load on the server so will need testing but should be able to cope with that no problem.

Haven't we had server load issues in the past?
