FA Cup 2016/17: Exeter draw Luton in First Round

Much to the disappointment of many Luton and Exeter supporters, the two league 2 teams will face each other in the first round proper of the FA Cup at St James Park. They will then meet again thee weeks later at St James Park in the League.

The game is scheduled to take place at 3pm on Saturday 5 November 2016, but fans will have to wait for confirmation from the TV companies. exeter_luton_programme090160

The two teams have met in two seasons before in the FA Cup. The most recent was when Luton were a Division 4 side and the two teams met in the first round of the FA Cup in the 1966/67 season. The teams drew 1-1 at St James Park, with Ray Keeley scoring for the Grecians in front of 4744 spectators. Luton won the replay 2-0.

Prior to that FA Cup, the two teams met in January 1960, in a third round match. Luton Town were in the top flight, Division 1, and had been beaten by Nottm Forest in the final at Wembley the previous season. Exeter had already beaten Barnstaple and Brentford to reach the third round. 20,000 fans had squeezed in to St James Park. But once Gordon Dale had been crocked by a Luton player, Exeter had no answer and lost 2-1, with an own goal for Exeter.
