Tisdale: “the players did everything I asked them to do”

York City were the 3rd visitors of the League 2 season to St James Park, and it was the Grecians 3rd win at home. A 100% League 2 home record, and Exeter City lie 5th in the table.

The teams lined up:-

Exeter City York City

03 Woodman 02 Oyebanjo
05 Baldwin 03 Davies
06 Coles 04 Smith
15 Moore-Taylor 23 Taft

07 Sercombe 16 Fyfield
14 Doherty 20 Allen
21 Gosling 22 Chamberlain
10 Gow 27 Brobbell
18 Reid 25 Chris Dickinson

The teams were very much as they were for the AFC Wimbledon home game and would appear to be the preferred home game set up. A 4-4-2 formation, with Oakley and Grimes looking after the middle of the park, with Davies and Wheeler providing the width.

York City started the game well, and after 19 minutes took the lead through a Ryan Jarvis tap-in. An injury to O’Flynn meant that Alan Gow was introduced on 22 minutes and with his first touch levelled the score. York looked for many parts of the game he more likely to score and take the points, but Alan Gow had other ideas. His thunderbolt on 72 minutes gave Exeter City maximum points.

Quotes:

Paul Tisdale:-

York City played really well – I thought they were excellent today. I’m surprised that they have had a poor start because they really were excellent. They played tactically for their manager, they worked really hard as a team and stopped us doing what we were trying to do.

It is three wins at home out of three. That bodes well our home form compared to last year – it is something we have been conscious of and I’m really pleased

It was a forced substitution – it isn’t the way you want to make a substitution, with John O’Flynn going off with a hamstring problem.

He (Gow) played really well, and it wasn’t just about the goals. He was fluid in play, he was mobile, he retained the ball really well. He did what he was asked to do and it was a terrific performance. Is anybody really surprised, because I’m not – he is capable of it, so well done Alan

Alan Gow:-

I’ve scored a few early ones just like that throughout my career, with different clubs. But it was good introduction and we went on to win the game which was the most important thing.

I was happy the second goal went in – I missed a few other chances, but I caught it well, and I knew it was in as soon as it left my foot.

People maybe forget that I have only played once 90 minutes since January – I’ve had quite a serious injury as I ruptured my ankle. So it has taken a while for me to get fit, but I’ve been working hard on my days off and it pays off.
