How close is Amps to getting any game time?
Love the idea of Union Berlin!

Also I just wondered what the conditions the matches are being played under.

Yep.

I remember watching Keagan play for Hamburg when they came to Berlin in March or April 1980 - playing Hertha BSC in the Olympic Stadium. the Hertha manager had a fool proof system published in the newspapers on how to stop the Hamburg machine ....... man-to-man mark Keagan off the pitch and just paly 10 v 10 men.

Hamburg won 0-6 I think........? (Keagan still scored).

(Use to referee in the shadows of that stadium too, and got my Class II awarded after referring a game of police v football referees - think I got my Class II for bravery, rather than stunning interpretation of the laws of the game whist encouraging fluid play)!

Playing Football Manager at the moment as Hoffenheim so will keep a look out for their results. Pleasantly surprised to see they're in the Bundesliga in real life.

Based in East Berlin?
They were hard core East and tried to embody the ideals of a socialist republic (they're still proud of that) but supposedly were also a centre of opposition (their main rivals were the Stasi-sponsored Dynamo Berlin). A complicated history.... Of course, by the time I was there the area was gradually being gentrified by Germans from the much wealthier west.

Watching former East German clubs is a surreal experience - we saw FC Magdeburg playing in the 4th tier, against an amateur side that was only formed years after Magdeburg were wining the Cup Winners Cup.

I was in Hamburg for a long weekend quite a few years ago when St Pauli played Union Berlin. It was considered a big game at the time, and I don"t think they were in the top flight. St Pauli fans considered themselves a sort of left leaning squatter anarchist student crowd in those days and maybe still do, and the Union crowd who travelled over (quite a few in our hotel) were mainly a working class crowd more akin to UK away crowds back in the day. We went up to the ground to try and get tickets but it was a sell out. Had quite a few beers with Union supporters after the match in the evening as we were staying in the Repperbahn area and St Pauli's ground was only a 5 min walk across a park from there
