With the club recently at a near historic high of 10th top 10 in league 1 , I wondered what the highest ever position Exeter City have ever been in the football league, even if it was for just one week?

I seem to recall that Carlisle were top of the old Division 1 (now premier league) for a week Our Greatest Season: When Carlisle were top of the league - Football Pink

Have City ever been top of the third tier or even top 3, I seem to have a vague recollection of us being really high up the table in late 70s/early 80s & Dicky Davies commenting on this on World of Sport! Are there any stattos out there or people with good memories?!

NB I don't mean the end of the season finish , & I also don't mean before the season starts when we are listed alphabetically!!

Oldham Athletic's ground is pretty high, I think. Joe Royle used to call it Ice Station Zebra.

I'm sure we spent a week or so at the top in the early 80s.

Didn’t we beat Northampton 5-0 at home on the first game of the season in the early 80s? I think that was the old Division 3.

Plus I’m sure we finished 2nd in the old Division 3 South once, behind aldershot I think (but could be wrong).

We finished second behind Brentford at the end of the first season Division three was created before it was split into Div 3 North and South I believe.

I have a funny feeling we were top of league 1 at half time in one of the early games this season.

I could easily have dreamt that though.

That was in Division 4. 1984/85

I remember the Grecians being 2nd in the early weeks of September 1980 in Division 3 after a good start.

1924/25 Division three South. City opened the season - 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 and were top of the table after games 2 and 3 dropping to second after drawing game 4.
