Are the Paddington trains running on their usual route? I did the journey last week and whilst only stopping at Taunton and Reading, thanks to ongoing work on the usual line the journey up was via Bristol and it added an hour to it.
There's major engineering works between Reading and Swindon all weekend.

Just by way of contrast, it is possible to get a direct train from Coventry to Wembley Central (via West Midlands Trains) which takes one and a half hours and costs £24 return.

Might be standing room only on BH Monday though.

Cranbrook to Waterloo is coming out at £105 for 4 with a friends and family card, you sure you did the right search?
I took it all the way to Wembley. It's now only coming out at £147, which would be about right with the first price I got, so God only knows what was going on on Sunday evening
