The problem with the fervour of ideological beliefs held by party bases is that the party bases tend to vastly over-estimate how many people agree with them or will ever realistically agree with them. Their fervour then results in them demanding that the party adopts policies that they like and think others will like, but in fact others do not like, and therefore drive the electoral prospects of the party that they support into oblivion.
