This week in 1986, we were looking forward to Mexico ‘86.

The last World Cup that it was reasonably easy to gain access to stadiums(many still had terraces for the group stages) & was not completely taken over by sponsors.
The Mexicans put on a good tournament with excellent TV coverage after having to step in when FIFA decided belatedly that Columbia would not have the infrastructure ready in time for a showpiece world sporting event.

The much missed Jimmy Greaves & Ian St John on the cover. They kept the punditry short, sweet & to the point with a added bit of humour from Greavsie

1985

The ODI’s are about to start, to warm us all up from the Ashes Series. Much anticipated after the last home Ashes Series in 1981. It was a good one too. England regaining the Ashes 3-1. Some great Test Matches that Summer.
Richie Benaud, Jim Laker & Tom Graveney were behind the microphone for the series. Sadly Lakers last, he passed away the following April.

The Aussies won the One Day Series 2-1.

The Bangles who were in their pomp are on Wogan. 1980s was a good decade for all girl groups. I saw a gig many years ago in their home city. Very good they were too..My favourite recording is probably the cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winter

On BBC2 a series Ebony People...This week one of the contributors is Marcus Garvey Jr(1930-2020) talking about his father(1887-1940) who was a Jamaican political activist in Jamaica,US & then UK. Some of his ideas of black racial purity put him at odds with many in the organisation he headed. UNIA(Universal Negro Improvement Association)

His life story in a biography film would be interesting.
