“God save William Grundy, for falling in manure”

The infamous Bill Grundy(1933-93) interview on the Today evening news magazine show on Thames TV.
Grundy was the Today news anchor, who turbo charged the Sex Pistols career, who up to that point were only getting publicity from music papers & red top papers.
Also in the studio were a few of the bands followers inc Susan Ballion & Steve Sevrin who had done a debut gig as Siouxsie & Banshees a couple of weeks before. Severin with the faux pas item on his arm.

And so my fav show 24 Hours in Police Custody is back with a new series this week. Episode one though has just elicited a lot of rage. SPOLIER ALERT....

A family has an attempted burglary at their house. The dad of the house chases the 2 perpertators away and they scarper on a motorbike. Bloke continues the pursuit in his car and in the end forces them to crash, badly injuring them.

It turns out the two perps are career crims, previous as long as their arms, usual story. They recover and are caught in the act again a few weeks later.

The driver of the car however is also arrested and faces charges for having injured the burglars.

In short, the burglars both get off with suspended sentences. The burgled dad however gets a 2 year prison sentence.

The burgled dad also had to stump out 50k in legal fees on top of the loss of income, and his wife had to abort their baby given the uncertainty around a prison stay. Makes you want to weep.

It is. Thankfully for them, as the law hasn't helped them, the public are.

Not that any money can compensate for spending two years in chokey whilst losing a child, but it can hopefully help.

The cuts to legal aid certainly give people like this chap a massive problem. Either you raise the money for legal representation by selling your house, remortgaging, using your life savings or go without any legal defence.

The case itself was an example of when the law comes up against public opinion. I don't think you will find too many feeling sympathy with the "victims". Reap what you sow and that. He was though originally arrested on suspicion of GBH which was downgraded to dangerous driving causing serious injury as the police couldn't ascertain any evidence of deliberate action.

He pretty much admitted dangerous driving at the time, he said he arrived at the corner too fast. All the evidence and damage (to two other parked vehicles) pointed to a high speed incident. As serious injuries was the outcome (fractured skull, bleed on the brain and several further broken limbs between them) the charge was always going to be passed by the CPS. It was some distance from his home, a normal five minute drive. You could see the sympathy the police dealing with him had and the circumstances which he found himself in with the "red mist".

Once the jury, probably correctly in view of the law, found him guilty, going on sentencing guidelines the 22 months he was given was a minimum term for the severity. The maximum sentence is five years, the starting point four years. Unfortunately it does not say anywhere in the law or sentencing guidelines "unless the scrotes deserved it". The jury could have pulled a "Coulston Statue" verdict but didn't.

You have to take into account that he was driving dangerously and it could easily have been an innocent party around that corner coming the other way.

The big let down was the two obvious career crims not getting a custodial sentence. That is probably a bigger issue. Tougher sentencing on repeated vexatious burglary is very much needed.

The Perils of Penelope Pitstop on children’s TV Time was a spin off from the popular Wacky Races first shown a couple of years before.
1 season(17 episodes) of the CBS production.
Sneeky Sylvester/ The Hooded Claw was out to get Penelope, foiled by Clyde & the Ant Hill Mob.

The Frankie Goes To Hollywood name check the Hooded Claw in the first verse of their power ballad The Power of Love...”I will protect you from the Hooded Claw”

The 2nd series of The Onedin Line is now on Sunday evenings prime time(from Tuesdays on its 1st Series)reflecting its popularity. It would stay in that slot for the rest of its run.
Mike & Bernie Winters on The Golden Shot. Were they doing a one off compere or doing their routine on the show ?
The Hill(1965) on ITV-London, a fine cast, Sean Connery,Harry Andrews, Michael Redgrave.

On C4. The Worst of Hollywood, a series of films mostly from the 1950s & early 60s that were primarily Sci Fi.

My favourite was Plan 9 from Outer Space(1957) Originally billed as Grave Robbers from Outer Space, directed by Ed Wood(1924-78) fascinating for its awfulness & bizarre storyline
The well known horror actor from the 20s & 30s,Bela Lagosi was near the top of the billing even though the takes with him are ol shots from his silent days, he died half way through production. Another actor who looked completely different then played his part.

A biopic film was made of Wood..Ed Wood(1994) with Johnny Depp, no less in the lead role, Martin Landau played Lagosi..Ironically the film had a couple of Academy nominations. The films Wood produced were so bad he became a bit of a cult figure.
