Alistair Yates CMILT BSc (Hons) APM Ch. Dip – Trust Nomination Notes

After 18 years away from the Trust, I am seeking nominations for election to BoS to main its stability and ongoing development. I helped shaped the initial vision and constitution of the Trust, I actively led the recruitment and the financial management of the Trust when a Trustee and Chair in the first 8 months. I opened the bank account and recruited the first 30 members to the Trust. Looking back at the records we raised £4,200 in the first 4 months following the opening of the account, we secured two commercial sponsors and bought £1,000 training equipment for the then manager Noel Blake. He was very supportive of the Trust at the time. I think the founding group should be recognized in a small way to celebrate 20 years of the Trust shortly. I would like them to be thanked, there are many unsung heros missed in published Trust history, they should be recognized for their hard work!

I have been active 1931er since the fund start and my family are members. Both my children are Junior Grecians and avid fans, I have supported the club since 1975. I have been a member of supporter’s groups in the past, and I support all Red Legion displays financially. I have sponsored players in the past and obtained sponsorship for players - Christian Riberio.

Away from Exeter I am an FA qualified Level 1 coach retired, having run a cup winning youth team for 3 years. I still referee matches in my local area to support local football. I am retired member of Round Table; I have help raise thousands of pounds in my local area through Santa floats, charity events and a the local beer festival in the summer. I have probably been part of raising £150k for charity locally over the last 10 years.

I have run my own supply chain business consultancy for the last 8 years. I am a certified project manager by formal exam and I am a business specialist in organisational change and development. I have used these skills working in 30 countries to transform businesses and turnaround organisations, maintaining business compliance and assurance. I have worked with board directors of major PLCs and businesses from £250M to £2Bn.

I am looking to maintain the stability of the Trust, support the ongoing development of the Trust to increase its brand awareness, while looking at commercial opportunities to develop Trust. I would like to tweak the Trust model to make the money paid in work harder for the Trust and club, to make the club we love safer for the future. I would like to get closer to the RED LEGION and encourage them to develop, I would supporter groups and community groups to develop the Trust within the younger generations.

I applaud and encourage more women in football to make the experience better for daughter in the future. I would reach out to members that may have left, to explain why they are important to our club. As I know some of some hard-core supporters that have left. I wish to develop the club relations to increase dialog and help shape targets, mould the mission and make sure targets are achievable, met or set for success. I want to increase youth membership of the Trust and encourage diversity. From a digital perspective I want to further improve communications and put in place electronic voting systems if practical and for nominations next year. I would also like to develop the PR of the Trust through celebrating the history and engaging the local and national media.

I live out of the area, but I attend matches regularly, I would attend meetings as required. I am available many match days for a conversation. With digital technologies I am confident I could be active for the Trust; I did do much work in the past while I was working away in Thailand. I would treat your nomination vote with great care and responsibility. I understand the Trust are seeking competences I possess and would be delighted to volunteer. Always ask a busy person to do a job!

Thanks! Al

I have added some minor elements to my published nomination to add more detail. I am at Scunthorpe, Plymouth and Bradford for people to ask questions. Subject to business commitments I may be at the Hustings, but Friday night living 180 miles away from Exeter is going to be a challenge at relatively short notice, the night before Bradford away. I will do my best, if not I hope the Trust will be able to setup a live link up. If not I ask for your patience and consideration.

Sorry, just to add I am delighted 8 candidates have stood, the members should be excited that people care so much. Whatever happens some increased vigor should be added to the Trust. I also hope that all people following the election are included to support the Trust in the coming year. They all clearly care to go through the nomination process. Well done all, I salute you!

Some people have asked about Trust membership on other threads. The standard answer is to look at retention of members and recovery of members first. The other element is that without knowing the figures in detail. Say we have 3000 members and we raise £150kpa. I make that the average contribution per month of circa £4.16. I would look to increase the average monthly membership contribution to say £250kpa, a contribution of circa £6.94 per member. A lot of people and I include myself have not changed their direct debit per month for years. So a gentle campaign to encourage £7 per month might work. The other side of this would be to increase members benefits with affinity deals and benefits. There are other areas including Trust merchandise that are not fully explored as yet. There are also some options of offsetting corporation tax from the club with creative loan repayments. This needs to be reviewed with corporate tax specialists. The Trust could then investment the money into revenue generating mechanisms. The overall impact would be positive for the club. We should also look at share structures again. With all the above an objective or targets needs to be created, within 50 years we could do something special. Morbid subject you could also encourage gifts in wills, like I have done recently. You dont want the tax man getting the money :)

why is the Red Legion in capitals and what do you mean by get closer to us as a group and for us to develop?

As you havnt ever made any contact with us in the past or the present, it's come as a little shock and a bit confusing to see us in your manifesto.

I believe one of my nominees is recognized by the RED LEGION, I deliberately approached him. have worked on multiple displays over the years from a funding perspective, I ask you to look through the go funding pages. The capitals was not significant on my part, it was just wording. I have supported the next display through funding as well. I wish every success.

I'll have to take you're word for the nomination but it isn't any of the other senior members I've spoken to. I agree you have donated to our displays and I thank you for that.

But you still havnt answered my question on how you plan to get closer to us or help us develop?

I would like to see the Trust develop the brand of the club and Trust by supporting some of the fantastic art displays and make sure spaces and resources are provided to develop the experience. We all agree that match day experience should be really positive. It is a fantastic avenue speaking as a father of an artistic lad to encourage artistic skills and expression. Its good to engage and talk.

Given your past associations with commercial sponsorship,,,,, With the future of a main sponsor of the Club currently looking somewhat uncertain, what steps do you believe the Trust should/ could be taking to help present the Club as a whole in a good light to a prospective new sponsor if, or more likely when, one is required?

I still don't think you have fully answered my question there nor do you fully understand what the Legion is or how we work.

Maybe make contact with the actual people who run the group and are members next time, it's not very difficult to make contact with us.

Hi TVR, I'm a strong believer in increasing engagement with the youngest supporters, those in their formative years open to the 'magic' of it all, with the potential of gaining a fan for life.

The Junior Grecians is currently doing sterling work in that area, what initiative would you suggest to attract even greater interest ?
