The driver should have ‘let the tyres down’ to gain the extra 6-8” to reverse out.

That happened at the Iron Railway bridge on the A30 at Goss Moor in the 1980s.
The Police were escorting a exceptional load(a friend of mine was in the detail) someone screwed up the height,the trailer just caught the bridge & got stuck.The Old Bill fearing acute embarrassment let the tyres down & the trailer then cleared the bridge A call to a local garage for a air compressor to pump the tyres up after the trailer cleared the bridegroom...It was like Billy Smarts Circus

I'm not very good at knowing what all the classes of trains are, but I do like the class 37. Apparently one of them is off to Dudley to have an alternative power supply put in. The great thing is the noise it makes.

They were built in the sixties and coming up to sixty years old. As for their noise, their nickname is "Growlers" !

Not South West related as such, but those of you who like to travel may like to know that there is a new no frills train operator running trains from London to Edinburgh (stops at Stevenage, Newcastle, Morpeth and Edinburgh). The service starts towards the end of October, and when I checked the rail fares it was £13.10 for a single with a railcard Journey time of 4h30m.

Claiming Stevenage as a "stop" is a bit of a stretch...once the "regular" timetable starts just one train a day, and that in the southbound direction only.
(Mind you, who would really want to "alight" at Satanage anyway?)
