Being able to travel up to London on one line to Paddington & return on a different line from Waterloo to the South West for no extra cost & using the same ticket.

I did that many times in the 1980s when it was convenient to do so if I was south of the Thames at the end of the day.

Rail franchises with different tickets & prices scuppered that from 1994 onwards.

On a Sunday morning groups of males,some a bit hungover waiting in small groups scattered around the city waiting for their lifts to their Sunday morning games.

There were 8 divisions in Sunday football in the early 1980s for the Exeter area...Not sure if there is even 1 division these days
