Handkercheifs. As schoolkids it was standard, when you had a cold, to carry a linen handkercheif in your pocket which would generally be sufficient to contain about three days worth of snot. If it was a heavy cold then often the rag would be soaked and finding a dry spot was a massive bonus. After a good blow, with an impressive "parp" the handkercheif would be crammed back into your trouser pocket where, if left for any significant period of time, would clagg up becoming a hardened ball of solid bogie which would have to be prised open if it was to be reused. Tissues were unheard of
