The threat of Coronavirus to ECFC

The country as a whole is now entering a period of great uncertainty for everyday life with the continued spread of the coronavirus (albeit from a very small base). Whilst we all hope it can be contained in the UK, we cannot ignore the threat it poses but at the same time should try and keep an objective view. The perception of fear should not cloud objective analysis of the virus’s effect and outcome. For example, the great majority of people so far infected worldwide do recover and most, but not all, the deaths have been in elderly people some with underlying health issues. Standard winter flu kills hundreds and sometimes thousands each year in the UK.

My post is to seek views from fans on what they think the impact could be on the rest of the League 2 football season. If the virus seriously spreads throughout the UK then football matches are under threat to protect the crowds who attend them. In the worst case scenario matches could be played behind closed doors , postponed or stopped altogether. The financial consequences could be devastating and would undermine the financial position of every football club including City.

Should the club be undertaking serious risk assessment at this stage?

Do they have any insurance against such an event?

Should turnstiles, stanchions, arm rests, toilets etc etc be deep cleaned before and after every match at St James Park?

Should entry into the ground be refused to anyone with a temperature?

Should players be encouraged to mix less with the general public?

If it becomes widespread, the Govt will ban all public gatherings, so the leagues would have to be postponed and then perhaps the remaining matches added on in the summer. Of course that is not ideal and will have financial consequences.
The only other alternative would be to call it as it is at the time of the postponement of the league
Obviously we hope that things will not get so far : we'll probably know in 2-3 weeks.

As a company that organises international meetings we are already addressing the real impact of the massive negative campaign surrounding the coronavirus situation. It is very likely that the major damage will be done more by the perception of the danger rather than its reality. Insurance against risks such as this are extremely difficult, particularly if the Government orders a shut down. Force Majeure would bring another load of problems. Better at this stage to see if it becomes a real issue rather than add to the unreasonable fear that is already being generated.

ECFC branded facemasks? Stock up the bar and catering and institute a forced post-match quarentine. Let's not miss a trick here.

Whilst the effects of the spread of coronavirus are already having a negative impact on the world economy, the fact is that a government can hardly sit back and say "Well, a few hundred of you are going to die from this virus, but never mind, let's just carry on as we are".
I don't sense there is any panic about it in the UK : maybe just some folks taking some precautions.
In the end it's a government decision, not in the public's hands or in the hands of big business, who I'm sure will be realistic about this problem.

Proportionality is the issue Mike...14,000 people have died from flu (regular) in the same timeframe...People say 'oh but we have a cure for flu'.

What's unknown of course, is how many people would have been infected / have died from Coronavirus, if the massive world wide effort to prevent the spread of it, had not been implemented.

There's no cure for flu. There's a vaccine that can be administered and is often targeted at vulnerable groups to prevent them catching it. Millions of people take that vaccine each year. The fear with Coronavirus is that those vulnerable groups are deeply exposed to the risk of the virus as there, currently is no vaccine.

I see that the Swiss have cancelled this weekend's football.
