There is an acute labour shortage.
Yes, but this isn't all at car washes and nail bars.

A lot of the labour shortage is down to skilled folk not bothering to return to work post Covid, it retiring early.

Can’t agree.
Most of the public are not buying the idea that those coming across the channel illegally are bona fide asylum seekers in the main. You are right in saying that the Tories are trying to reflect majority public opinion on the issue, but there’s nothing wrong with that IMO. God forbid our politicians doing what the public wants. 😁
I would encourage you to carry on with leftist word bingo, the hyperbolic use of words like ‘bigotry’ ‘far right’ and the like will drive voters to the Tories in their droves! 👍
I don't believe that the Tories reflect majority of the public opinion on refugees, I believe that the majority of the population are more tolerant than you might think

. Do you not think that the Government has responsibility to be particularly careful in its use of language if it is inflammatory and leads to hatred and violence?

Think you're conflating former Eastern European immigrants with refugees seeking asylum. Anyone possessing the wherewithal to navigate thousands of miles and spend thousands of euros to join family in the UK is very unlikely to aspire to work in a car wash. Often they're young, educated and skilled, many speak English too. Just what we need in fact, what with all these covid-related retirements.

Unfortunately more often then not, the young men arriving here illegally are unskilled, culturally backward and just what we don’t need. Feel free however to continue in kidding yourself otherwise.

Mmm, labour skills shortage?? Or is it pay those that are already here with the skills or the capability to get the skills a decent wage to encourage them to stay either in the job or in the country rather than disappearing off to the other side of the world to get the money they believe they're worth or get a basic job stacking shelves or serving coffee. I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard on the radio in the last few weeks how a nurse or a teacher can earn more serving coffee at Costa than they can doing their profession. Maybe if the Government got a grip of that to start with then they might be able to get a grip of a few other things like immigration, because you wouldn't actually need so many 'skilled' immigrants or the continual house building to house the continuing stream of immigrants, legal or otherwise, wasting money on hiring out hotels and holiday camps to house the aforementioned illegal immigrants. The sad facts are that it doesn't matter who is in charge at No 10 because both sides are as incompetent as each other and only the blue or red paint on your political glasses convinces you otherwise.

Bottom line is the reasons why thousands of people want to up sticks and leave their home country in the first place. If governments worldwide and the UN sought to alleviate the issues that drive people to flee to foreign lands then the problems would not arise further down the line.

The amount of vacancies in the jobs market is high but from memory is now dropping.
It would be much more preferable for a Government to encourage the millions of working age people here who are now economically inactive to join/rejoin the labour market rather than use foreign workers to plug the gaps.

Good luck with that Tavy. Very good episode of the ' Briefing Room ' saying very little the Govt could do to incentivise these people back into the workforce.
