It is doubtful whether anyone will play as many Football League games for Exeter City as Mitchell.
Noted mainly for his defensive roles in the team, he played in every position, including taking over between the posts when the keeper was injured.
Playing in a variety of positions, he eventually settled into a wing-half role and was noted for his drive and encouragement of team mates, which inevitably led him to becoming captain.
