You can't force it with things like words on screens. It needs to happen organically. Even going back to the days of the Cowshed, the atmosphere was always dependent on what was happening on the pitch. An end to end game which is 1-1 and we're playing well will always generate more noise than if you're not creating and losing, or if your 3 nil up and coasting. Also, as much as a big crowd helps, it's not as key to a good atmosphere as the entertainment on display. Some of our best atmospheres have been with 4.5k attendances.
I think - conversely - the atmosphere is harder to get going when the Bank is sold out. A lot of the ones likely to make noise turn up pretty late having been down the pub, these days if you're coming in after 2.30 your options get limited quickly.

Maybe introducing a bit of novelty and imagination into the chants might help, like the 'Cameron Dawson he's better than you' brilliant and novel for that game, and to an extent the chants against Joey Barton, within realms of decency of course. This incessant repetition of various versions of 'We hate Argyle' is not only pathetic but getting very boring. How many other L1 clubs actually care about ECFCs rivalry with PAFC to be honest.

I've always thought our home mob is quite young compared to other clubs. Hence the rather limited repertoire. Things are different away of course, more wit (and more drink).....

Back when I used to stand in the middle, I remember these sorts of comments coming up.

To understand how to get a chant going on the Bank is simple - you need to be surrounded by people willing to join in. The concentration of people like are found in the middle and towards the back, always has been since the opening of the Stand. Even if you're in the middle, to get consistent noise needs 1/2/3 people leading it all game and have the mentality to do so; which is why you will never see better atmosphere in it post-RL without a new group.

There isn't a clique, this is something you have imagined. Choose to stand out on the sides with the more passive support (including myself) and you won't get many people joining in with you, it's a simple as that. They aren't going to join in in the middle because you'll be a couple of distant voices, it's not because they don't like you.
I agree with Max here.

Also, I think the sideychanters as I'm calling them stand near the front so any noise they make is dispersed out towards Old Tivvy Road and towards the pitch, not back towards the heart.

On a very few occasions this season chant started by the sideychanters has been picked up by the hearties. I stand between both and it's rare that thise round me join in unless we're firing on all cylinders.

The sideychanters need to move.

Also, away from home there is much more willingness to chant to help the team. I expect an away crowd is made up of some Big Bankers (sideychanters and hearties), some from the Selco and Stanno stand that wouldn't necessarily chant at SJP because they're in the minority plus some expats who see far fewer matches and so are well up for a chant when they do.

I’ve always felt like the side chanters are a bit half arsed, they’ve had a couple of beers and want to get it going but won’t commit to doing it all game 😂 Then gives them something to complain about down the Black Horse afterwards

If you’re serious about getting noise in the Big Bank then there needs to be an effort beyond that. Acoustics aren’t great, it’s a huge stand and needs a bit of organisation - unlike the Cowshed which I imagine the side changers are still harming back to (even though it wasn’t all that)

Age and health issues for me mean I’m done with that side but hopefully the younger lot can learn from the past and get it bouncing agains. Certainly last season there seemed to be a buzz so it’s possible.

This is very true. I sit in the Selco and don't chant, I might shout now and again but definitely no chanting. Then I attend Barnsley away and I sing ( and even dance) literally all game, although 8 pints pre match obviously helped my mood!

If Carlsberg did football clubs...

Shall we have an Exeweb poll? 'Are you a sideychanter or a hearty?'

...it will be about as useful as last week's poll on Jay and Dieng.
