Hallett has already sent questions to Johnson asking if scientific evidence and opinion was sought before Eat Out to Help Out was launched, which appears not to have been the case.

Speaking to the Observer, Prof John Edmunds of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who was a member of the Sage committee of advisers to ministers and who has submitted written evidence to the inquiry, said the controversial Eat Out to Help Out scheme – which gave people discounts for eating in restaurants and pubs – was never discussed with scientists.

“If we had [been consulted], I would have been clear what I thought about it,” said Edmunds. “As far as I am concerned, it was a spectacularly stupid idea and an obscene way to spend public money.”

I sense the majority public opinion on this inquiry will be wanting them to find out why we locked down so much rather than should we have kept more onerous restrictions for longer.
I fear for this inquiry and the publics conference in it if it only wants to skewer ministers from the pro-lockdown side of the argument.
As an aside the DM are now reporting that the reluctance of number 10 to go ‘full disclosure’ is based on worries that the plot to oust BJ will be there for all to see.
Could get interesting.

Indicator: GDP per capita ($ terms) Germany UK France EU Italy (listed with current best performing first)

Looks pretty neutral. Affected by $ movements.

I would have thought that getting all big calls right, and delivering a world beating Covid response, would suggest HMG had nothing to fear from the enquiry.

Or perhaps Eat Out to Help Out was ridiculously stupid, Rishi is desperately trying to cover his ass, and we were consistently mislead?

Yes, lest we forget, this was the narrative in 2021. No talk of overthrowing Johnson then iirc

Yep, no talk of that in the halcyon days when BJ was getting plaudits for taking us out of lockdowns in good time and in good order with us all jabbed.
Then the photos and the stories of the not so wild parties started……….🤷‍♂️

But beneath all that there was rank incompetence by a government of mediocrities, lead by a narcicist with the attention span of a gnat. This is what Lady Hallet will lay before us in the coming months and years. The odd party, wild or not, will pale into insignificance as we discover just how right all Johnson's big calls were.
