As purchase tax was introduced in 1940 and extended to confectionery in 1962 I am not sure you should be haranguing poor old Tony Barber. Selwyn Lloyd perhaps ?Hardly Al. My state school "socialist education" taught me to all question and mistrust the lies fed by "the establishment".
And, sadly, my early years were blighted by the ar$e end of a succession of Tory (mal)administrations in every system. And not just the education one either - I've still never forgiven thieving Chancellor Anthony Barber for imposing Purchase Taxes on my pocket money sweets.
PS. As for my age I'm delighted to advise that even as I was entering my first year at Exmouth Exeter Road Infant School you were probably just finishing your final year in the 6th Form at the Tebburn Academy For Young Toffs. (Fees Non Negotiable - although Tax Deductible)
P.S. No paying academy for me. I was educated in state schools and a state technical college.
