Express & Echo Football Final page from 14/2/1953.

A report on the reserves who played in the Southern League at the time. Sounds like difficult conditions to put it mildly in Merthyr ! 2” of snow on the pitch. Combining that with a leather ball must have been sapping.
They were made of stern stuff in those days.

Remember the pink paper fondly. I would run down to the corner shop to buy it.

I liked coloured papers. They had a green version in Bristol, where my Grandad and I bought a copy once. By coincidence, we'd just watched Rovers beat Argyle! :)

📕 Exeter City Football Club Museum Charity are trying to complete a full scan of every Exeter City Football Club (home and away) programme (every page) on to the Grecian Archive (https://grecianarchive.exeter.ac.uk/).

We have currently scanned 2️⃣,8️⃣1️⃣2️⃣ programmes across Mens, Womens, Reserves, Youth, non ECFC played at SJP & Specials.

Missing home programmes between seasons 1946/47 to 1971/72 that we would love to scan are the following:-

➡ Newport County - 29th March 1952
➡ Southend United - 29th March 1953
➡ QPR - 13th February 1954
➡ Gillingham - 15th April 1963

I have the Gillingham programme in my collection, which you are welcome to scan, and also a few single sheet home reserve team from that period that may be of interest. PM me.

In RaWZ we trust....Amen.
Tony Kellows first game at SJP in his 2nd spell with the Grecians in March 1980. Ironically his first game was away at Blackpool his former club.
Ray Pratt a £10,000 signing from Merthyr on the same day making his SJP debut.
The £80k combined fees for the strikers is the equivalent of £280k today.
The club certainly got their money’s worth(& goals) from the pair.

October 1981.

A hugely entertaining game at SJP...Fair play to Millwall who did not throw in the towel at 5-1 down.

Looking at the lineup, Mike Lester & Joe Cooke both signed in the summer, did not settle in Devon & moved back to clubs in the north later in the season.

Funny how some memories are crystal clear, and some are foggy, even though it's from the same era and team. That's basically the FA Cup 1981 "hall of fame" but with 3 changes, and I have no real memory of Lester at all. (Only 19 appearances, says Wikipedia).

Good crowd. Was it for Liverpool tickets in the League Cup?
