Since 1958/59 that saw the introduction of a national 4th Tier, the upcoming season will be the 65th since that reorganisation.
Below is a list of the clubs that have only competed in the 3rd & 4th tiers(FL)since.

Although the average attendances look poor compared to today, after many years of decline the aggregate attendance for the season had slightly risen for the first time in years. The alarming fall in crowd numbers had been arrested. The nadir was 1985/86.

1985 Heysel disaster, English football banned from europe, football at a very low ebb...

1985/86 it was not even on the TV for 6 months, no one was that bothered either iirc. Unthinkable that scenario now.

A decent 1986 World Cup in Mexico was the start of interest returning.

15/12/1956.

Ipswich were Division 3 (S) Champions at the end of the season. Alf Ramsey had been appointed manager at the beginning of the previous season.
Incredibly Ramsey would lead Ipswich to the Football League Championship within 5 years.

1974.

The game against Torquay at SJP which was a 2pm KO due to the ban on the use of floodlights at sports grounds was the first home game in 7 weeks, due to multiple waterlogged pitch postponements.

The first Football League games played on a Sunday.

A different world back then. Industrial strife with 3 day weeks & all the rest made for fertile thinking & a temporary change of match days. The Pools Companies & religious groups were unhappy plus the tricky situation about not being able to change admission on a Sunday had to be overcome(Sunday Observance Act 1780) The latter was achieved by having free admission but you had to have a programme which was bought at the turnstile 😁. It all seems a world away today with 7 day opening everywhere.

A good crowd for those days at Valley Parade for the visit of the Grecians which would have pleased the Grecian Directors because the away club were entitled to a third of the gate receipts after expenses were deducted.

BTW the first Sunday games were a few FAC 3rd round games at the beginning of the month.

The Express & Echo Football Final finished at the end of the 1980/81 season.
During the climax of the 89/90 season it was briefly revived for the last few games.
