We've just made it into the (imaginary) play-offs there, on goal difference, with a home win on the final day. Omen?

Actually not having play-offs had one upside back then - once we knew we couldn't go up, those end of season games could be free-scoring fun. (And before kick-off, a sheepish wave from the players in the centre circle, IIRC).

Sheff Wed are relegated to Div 4 in that table, but as you say, one more game to go, so they weren't. Closest they've ever been.

Yes..I’ve forgotten what it was like before play offs, which were first used in 1987.Not that the Grecians came anywhere near them until our time in the Conference.

The one thing about those pre play off times was promotion was achieved on merit for the 4th placed team over 46 games in Division 4.

15th September 1990.
The Grecians had made a good start in Division Three after a 6 year absence.
The travelling Grecians were all pinching themselves after two wins out of two on the road.It of course was not going to last.
Iirc the next away game was a midweeker at Birmingham City where a credible draw was picked up.

1-1 at Birmingham followed by a 2-0 home win over Bournemouth. Richard Dryden scoring all the goal for City in those two games in a bit of a hot spell from left back. We then went 10 league games without a win collecting only 4 points starting with a 0-1 home loss to John Beck's Cambridge who proved a bit of a bogey side for us at that time. Not dealing very well with long ball, bully boy tactics isn't a new thing.

Leeds were robbed of a goal in the FAC Semi.Ray Tinkler was the ref, someone they would feel aggrieved with again 4 years later.
Torquay under Frank O’Farrell had a good season finishing 7th,topping that the next season with a 4th place finish.O’Farrell then left to manage Leicester & Man Utd.
O’Farrell still lives in Torquay.Going strong at 93.
The Grecians mid table in Division Four after a brief 2 stay in the division above.
