An unsung hero from WW2 has passed away at the ripe old age of 103. Not "One of the few" but part of 165 women of the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) who played an important role transporting planes to the front line and she was one of the the last survivors of that group of brave women. RIP

The Guardian reported that he dies unexpectedly at 86. Odd phrase.

Saudi Prince Khalid Abdullah

Apart from his business interests, he built up a huge horse racing and stud breeding operation round the world. Quite simply the finest owner breeder of thoroughbred horses in modern times and possibly ever.

Yes he had the wealth to achieve this but it was done applying sound business principles and using skilled and trusted professional advisors. He brought employment to many ordinary stable and stud staff and prosperity to others in the racing world.

He was also a very decent man and loyal to his employees in difficult times. When virtually all his other big owners had deserted Henry Cecil in very bad times he kept sending horses to Henry. The pair were rewarded with the emergence of the mighty Frankel, probably the best flat race horse I have ever seen. He also quietly paid for ground breaking cancer treatment for both Henry Cecil and Robert "Bobby" Frankel, two of his main racehorse trainers. Frankel the horse was named in memory of Bobby Frankel after he had died from cancer.

A very quiet and unassuming man who preferred to race his horses in the name of Mr K Abdullah rather than his royal name.

RIP PK.
