Have you thought about the number of players Grimsby released or sold or left on a freebie or even retired? Perhaps they were just replacing the numbers that left?
Grimsby now have 37 players in their squad (2nd largest in the division and 5 more than City). Like City they have a large number of under 21’s.

  • The majority of L2 clubs have released/sold more players than they have signed with the exceptions of Cheltenham, FGR, Crawley, Carlisle, Barrow, Bolton.
  • Several teams have brought in the same number of players they have released* and some (including Grimsby..) do have smaller squads.
  • Clubs with the most players 'lost' include us, Colchester, Salford and Stevenage.

*Some clubs retained lists included U21 players I think.

I take it they're included in the 37, If their idea is like ours to use youth then that is a sign of the times, Instead of those late 20's early 30's journeymen, Let the hungry youngsters get given the chance if they're good enough.

Like City that squad includes 3 players young enough to play for the youth team. Including a 15 year old who’s already played a couple of games for the first team.

Jack Arthur is used in the first team squad making City at 32. Grimsby have already used players in the first team not pictured on that page.

So then people saying this or that club buying loads need to look into the detail more closely? Like i have said if an owner has the money to pay their players better than us so be it, If they don't why would a player go to that club? I think before we all get a bit huffy about any possible bailout, Lets wait until we see if one happens and if it does lets see what the critiea is if it is made public.

A fair few of our "first team" squad are teenagers. One, Louis Boyd, recently broke the record for the youngest ever player to play for us at 15 years and 236 days, he also scored on his debut. A number of others are teenagers too and quite a few will be given a decent chance to make a stake for a regular place. Plus, as has been mentioned, we have only signed about the same number of players we released at the end of last season.

If you are talking actual professionals, City have 29. Arthur and Iseguen are still scholars and Sonny Cox hasn't yet left school. 12 of those are currently under 21 with Seymour and Hartridge 21.

Comparing playing budgets to the previous season is the only accurate way but that information would not be in the public domain, yet at least.

Here's a list of our squad (James Morton to be added).

Of the 32 players listed here, 10 are teenagers (a couple are out on loan) and it includes our player-coach (Ben Davies) and our goalkeeping coach (Sam Russell).
