Antibody treatments are 6 months away

Repurposing current drugs is around 2 months away (this includes the likes Remdesivir the yanks are pushing)

Vaccine around 18 months.

The idea that the world's medical community is just sitting there waiting for a vaccine and fighting this with just ventilators is incorrect. Or that "normality" hinges purely on a vaccine alone.

Treatment, what treatment?
There is help and support, but no treatment
Think of HIV as a parallel
"While there's no cure for HIV, there are very effective treatments that enable most people with the virus to live a long and healthy life."
NHS site

At the moment, once the virus hits the lungs hard some will recover with varying degrees of discomfort and residual incapacity.
For others it's oxygen treatment (as with Boris) or ventilators (probably with induced comas).

As I understand it there's a hunt on for combination drug therapy which will protect damage to the lungs and other problematic organ inflamation.
If they crack that the morbidity levels could reduce drastically.

That takes pressure off of ICUs and buys time for further incremental improvements.

And we still don't know the actual mortality rate of this thing. Until countries (including us) have a much greater handle as to how many people have had it, it is very hard to know.

At the moment the mortality rate generally looks fairly scary. Under 1% may not sound much, but 0.8% of 66,500,000 people is still over half a million dead in the UK if most people are likely to catch it at some point before a vaccine arrives.

Restart the season on 13/03/2021 at the same point as it finished. Let the Premier league pay the wages/expenses of the EFL teams

The RD&E are trialling five existing treatments as part of a wider UK trial being coordinated by Oxford University according to Panarama the other night. They are hoping to have some kind of results by July but do not expect anything in the realms of a game changer. Rather just something that can assist recovery to a small degree.

The mortality rate of course is age related just to add to the confusion.

I wonder what the rate is for people who
appeared to be healthy with no underlying issues who have died from the virus aged below 70 ?

I fear the collateral damage from stopped cancer screening(bowl, breast, cervical) plus a lot of cancer treatments scaled back could match some of the figures we have seen for Covid-19 in the long run.

What was the reason why cancer treatments etc stopped in the first place?

Low immunity. The last place you want to be is around a hospital with the virus floating about.

The screening is cut back/stopped because all hands to the pump on Covid,Hopefully because the NHS has not been swamped as expected these can be back on track soon.

The mortality rate appears to be very much skewed towards the old and infirm. The median age of women who have died from COVID-19 in the UK is 84, for example.

Fit and healthy people under 50 have very little chance of dying.

Anyway, football.

So the players can return to training this week. So long as they keep to social distancing. Or was organised sport not allowed.
