It didn't harm our chances in 1981, our 4-2 victory at non league Maidstone

Maidstone were a top non league side back then, they turned the Grecians over a couple of years before in the 2nd round.

Iirc they had already beaten local rivals Gillingham that year in the cup

It didn't harm our chances in 1981, our 4-2 victory at non league Maidstone saw us through to fixtures with Leicester, Newcastle and Spurs on our run to the quarter finals !

I guess I meant initial reactions as the draw is made CB.

Only for it all to go financially pear shaped in a mere couple of years when they dropped out of existence at the start of the 92-93 season (but after the fixtures had come out) groundless and (almost) playerless.

That was a few years later G2K, they gained promotion to the FL in 1989.
A major mistake selling their ground & ground sharing with Dartford. Both clubs went bust.
The FL tightened up regulations with regard to promoted teams to the FL after that fiasco. Maidstone went bust only a couple of weeks before the new season started.

They entered the FL at then end of the 89-90 season and survived for two years before crashing and burning right at the start of 92-93...i.e. a mere "couple"of seasons.

And, thinking about it, didn't that "tightening of regulations" save our own sorry arses a few years later?

Yep. Macclesfield were denied promotion in 1995.

In 97/98 season. Lost in a reply 1-0 in a replay after a 1-1 draw at The Park. They equalised very late on. A lot of Youth Cup info here.

We'd already had "our fill" of Millwall with a trip to the Old Den in Round 2. Rather than stand in the double fenced cage in the away end (an attempt to keep home cretins out rather than visiting supporters in), my mate and I were seated in a stand. After jumping to our feet to celebrate our goal, we rather rapidly sat down again !
