At the end of each season the club usually removes the top layer of the pitch and reseeds it to promote good grass cover and root penetration. Owing to our participation in the play-offs in May, the club took the decision that there was insufficient time to complete these works in time for the start of the new season. This may be contributing to its current state.
I'd forgotten about our extended season - so the pitch wasn't "put to bed" (to use Cricket square parlance). That figures.

Also Clive Pring has said the side nearest the stand gets less sun (in shadow all morning in winter) so is prone to being worse than the other side.

He's my new favourite player. I'm not convinced that when he goes on one of his marauding runs he's ever really got the ball under control or that he knows what he's going to do next but i wouldn't want to get in his way.
