Dan McCauleys name was mentioned on another thread, has anyone got any particular memories of the time he tried to get involved with the club ?
I can’t remember that much about his involvement in any takeover except the occasion he had a plane fly over SJP with a banner saying “Dans the Man” or something similar.
I guess Cliff Hill was chairman at the time(it would have been around 1982 iirc)

He subsequently took over PAFC & then was involved in Tiverton Town FC,but that’s all I can really recall about him in the football world.

Was he ever at director at ECFC ?

*Mods.Perhaps this should be on the Exeter City Memories sub forum.

I believe he went up the park and my Dad was introduced to him. I always remember him saying "I've just shook hands with a millionaire" :)

My abiding memory of Dan "I own Drakes Island" McCauley (RIP) was when I was 'treated' to watch Everton play Gargoyle in a pre-season friendly at Gnome Park.
One of my best buddies is friends with Bill Kenwright who invited us to join us in the Boardroom for both games on Everton's pre-season in the SW. Because the Grecians had entertained Everton in our usual magnificent style we were invited as guests at the next game v Gargoyle.
On arrival at Gargoyle we were met by Sir Phillip Carter (RIP) and his dear wife Harriet who escorted us up to the Directors Box seats and, thankfully, we sat with the Everton contingent.
At half time we followed Harriet & Philip down to the Green Room and all of a sudden Dan 'The Little Man' McCauley stopped us and said "Are you on the list ?". The Carters looked astonished so to avoid any embarrassment to them we waved them on and went to see Dan's list with Dan.
Sadly our names were not on the list so Dan sent us packing.
The Carters were very embarrassed by this but said that, unlike Exeter, it was typical of poorly run lower league clubs and said that all we had missed were curled up cocktail pasties and Nescafe in paper cups !

The verbage on that banner flown over SJP read: "Its downhill without Dan"! A clear reference to Cliff Hill, who stood in the way of McCauley taking over the club. Clifford Hill went through a period of distain regarding Citys supporters, and put up with a lot of abuse for not relinquising his stake in the club. I remember on one occasion a group of protesters with placards stood in protest outside of his residence in Beer. Good thing he got over it and let us carry on using the C&F.

Didn’t a pic of the banner make the front page of the Sunday Independent which was quite a big thing in those days.

I do recall that..I remember thinking at the time that it was bang out of order to go to Mr Hills home.

It was a small group of younger supporters iirc. The exuberance of youth was a forgiving factor with the Hills I would imagine.

Pretty sure he was but not for very long. Jumped ship when he couldn’t take it over.

No evidence on the Companies House website that he was ever formally appointed as a director of our limited company.

I believe he was invited to join the board. He (was) is on the share register. We have, in the museum a great Christmas Card he did for the board at the same time the plane was flying around.
I did get him to join the Trust, it will have elapsed!
