...are down to their lowest on record (since 1981).

Is DNA, CCTV etc having an effect do you think, or are the figures just being fiddled better?

What d'you reckon?

A trend across western democracies apparently.
Probably a combination of a rise in personal wealth, technology in crime detection and the feminisation of society generally.

That and no one bothers to tell the old bill about petty crime, violence or drugs anymore.

Although the Crime Survey is supposed to cover the non reporting of crime you speak of.
You're right of course. But I would envisage (though I don't know for sure) that theft from and of cars is down massively since the 80's as no one but the really desperate bother with it now. That would lower the figures but everything barring that may stay the same. So yes, crime figures would look lower but nothing is different except the odd bloke losing his car stereo.

That's very clever of it, how does it do that then?
I don`t know a great deal about it, but rather than hard data, isn`t it a survey of the public (obviously!) and their perceptions and personal experiences of crime? Despite that, it`s quite accurate apparently.

I understand the cynicism AU, but there are currently 4K spare prison places and rumours of 6 more prison closures next year, perhaps summat`s happening and we`re getting more civilised.
