Do I spot some self criticism in here Jason or were you only temporarily at point ? :S :)

The adept practitioner of the noble art of nudging and nurdling works the ball into the spaces between the fielders rather than at them of course. One run partner.
I was at point for pretty much the entire innings apart from a few overs at cover when Skip was bowling.

They bowled to their (usually 7-2, even 8-1 to our more attack-minded bats) field really well. When the field is loaded that way you have to be disciplined in your bowling to a fifth stump line, we had practically nothing on the pads.

To bowl to those fields at Club level is quite an achievement (clap)

See that Sidmouth 2nds made 279/6 in their allotted overs against Alphington last weekend. The visitors were all out in reply for just 137 runs, whose top scorer with 38 runs was a Matt Taylor !

Tough trip to Old Emanuel on Saturday - nice enough bunch but what a rabble. Match ended up finishing after 8pm as they took an age to do anything.

They batted first, and one opener tore into us before being cleaned up for 40-odd. Their #3 then did more of the same - they were 80-odd off 10 overs, but then we took the pace off the ball and brought the rate down. Problem we had was players were going down injured all over the shop, three of us (my thigh has been very tight all season - booking in for a sports massage this week to sort it out) down. One was due to bowl then tore his hammy, but he hobbled in to bowl a couple of overs of spin, taking a brilliant c&b into the bargain (having dropped two catches before his injury when moved to my specialist point position!). Some late order biffing - their #9 and skipper by the looks easily their best batsman - pushed them to a daunting 287 all out.

In reply we got off to a decent start, pairing steady ol' me with returning Windies biffer Rohan, but we both fell with the score on 45 and they turned the screw, we eventually fell for 187.

The late finish meant by the time we got back to the club for refreshment the 1s' and 3s' oppos had left - I was hoping to catch up with them, as the 1s were playing against someone I played with as a nipper, while the 3s were playing against someone I've played against a few times and got on well with. Grrrr.

By hook or by crook we've managed to get four sides out for Saturday. I'm still in the 2s, mind.

After a week on holiday then most of a week touring our Welsh campuses, quick update:

My lot, the 2s, are looking in serious danger of dropping straight through Div 4 after our relegation from Div 3 last season, mainly due to having zero penetration with our bowling. Two weeks ago we played Ripley, a side containing a few ex-Kempton. We posted a challenging 222 thanks mainly to someone playing a fine innings before a bit of jug avoidance:

However, they knocked 'em off comfortably with a ton from one of the ex-Kempton players.

Last week we played Old Hamptonians, a club very much on the up (all three of their sides won their division last year I believe), as evidenced when they bowled us out for 173, one of their fast bowling brothers running through us for a 7-fer. I couldn't repeat my heroics as, despite feeling in good form I nicked one behind of the aforementioned quick for 8.

This target then looked minuscule as our weak bowling combined with some ferocious hitting meant they knocked them off in just 23 overs. Ouch.

Tomorrow, weather-permitting, we're at Merstham and scene of *that* catch last season.

Doubt if anyone ever got away with that at my club! :)
