Summarised much better than my earlier post agree 100% - also on Saturday Cheltenham had a full scale picnic during every break in play - so frustrating
Twice in the first half all the players went to the technical areas for drinks and instructions while a Cheltenham player received attention. There were three minutes added time at the end of the first forty five. Are we supposed to believe that those breaks lasted ninety seconds each ?

There's things going wrong in football at present and short changing supporters is one of them.

At at the end of the game, whilst 'playing' the 7 minutes added on, Cheltenham managed to stop the game for 2 minutes - which was not then added on by the ref !!
But as others have said, it's not just the time eaten up, it's the constant disruption of play, not allowing any rythem or flow to develop.

I think the issue is more with the ref than Cheltenham Town, because they were truly poor and probably realised they could get away with it on this occasion. And it was a learning curve for us because our young team got sucked in.

Some clues are there in the background. Mr Robert Lewis, our referee in question, is one of the EFL's longest serving officials - his first League game being Rochdale v Rushden & Diamonds in 2005!. 17 yrs later and he's ......... still in the lower echelons.

You draw your own conclusions.

Mr Lewis is human however and we all have off days; however, maybe there's greater argument for the FA to hone their existing referee recruitment/retention/promotion scheme, because I suspect he would not have received a glowing assessment from MT, but I wonder how much credence there is in these appraisals collectively over the years (decades in the case)?

If Carlsberg did football clubs...
The obvious solution is the ref having the ability to stop the clock, like in rugby union.

This, however, stops the television and therefore advertisers knowing more of less exactly how long the programme will last.

It doesn't solve the problem either. The tactic is to break the flow of the game and disrupt the opposition putting pressure on them. They didn't mind playing seven minutes. Wycombe have rarely minded playing long periods of time added on. They achieved their objective of making a stop start game and breaking any flow.

Agreed.

Stopping the clock seems like a solution in terms of playing out the full minutes.
But reclaiming lost time is ready in the referee's power.
As is dissuading time wasting at source with bookings.

It wouldn't stop the out of possession nonsense.
And would still give licence to teams who want to break up a game when they are under pressure.

I agree that it doesn't eliminate the 'gamesmanship' of breaking up play and momentum.

It would however solve the problem that was publicised at the beginning of the season, saying that many games were only actually 55 minutes long!

In all the years i have watched City, Cheltenham are right up there with their Cheating and time wasting Tactics. Be surprised if they stayed up this season
