There's nothing better than seeing Academy players come through & make it into the first team & I'm more than willing to give them a bit slack. MT is, cleverly, talking about a transitional season to lower expectations & take the pressure off the youngsters. But don't be surprised to see us there or there abouts, again next season.

We currently have about the same firepower and we were there or thereabouts weren't we? We might not do as well as next season, but the firepower hasn't really changed.

If ajose suddenly gets his act together,we will be right up there,but the key word here is IF !

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, we have needed a specialist defensive-focused right back, to allow us to play a proper 4 at the back formation as an alternative to 3-5-2, for at least the last two seasons. Maybe someone on loan from a Championship or L1 team, but a better defender than Richardson (who was never really tried there, in fairness). A back 3 with Sweeney leaves us vulnerable: Williams plays too far forward and Jake has been too central.

Whether we can afford to sign anyone is a different matter, as I have argued elsewhere.

Time to revert to 4-3-3? Maxted, New FB, new CH, Parkes, Sparkes; Taylor, Atangana, Collins; Williams, Bowman, Law. Some of the lads on the bench: Ward, Sweeney, Hartridge or Dyer, Jay, Kite or Randall, Ajose and Seymour.

As you say, Richardson hardly ever played at RB. Sweeney is our RB.

It's a very big "IF". If you read about his playing record over the last 3 years you can see his injury has totally put the brakes on his career. You can see Matt is loathe to risk him. He might come back for s game or two and then be out again for a long while. I don't think we can count on Ajose at all. Of course I hope I'm wrong and he comes back to score 15-20 gpals.next season

I repeat we have no firepower and I can’t see where the goals are coming from with this squad if there are no additions.If the rest of the team is rebuilding with the youth they won’t be bailed out by goals from the attack so maybe initially establishing ourselves in safe mid table while we regroup would be good and acceptable. We shouldn’t necessarily be expecting to challenge yet again. Of course it would all change if Ajose started to hit the net regularly , I just don’t feel confident about him though.

Agree one of the two signings MT mentioned of being hopeful of making has to be to try and find a striker who can find the back of the net more often than we have left at the moment...I don’t think Matt sees the RB position such a priority as some of the fans as he always speaks very highly of Sweeney’s impact on the team.

I think I read somewhere that Ajose may have had a clear up operation this time to put the problem right not just a patch up job as before which kept breaking down on him.

Really hope so. We need a fox in the box and with money tight it will be hard to.bring someone good in.

So if we have ‘no firepower’ now and managed to spend the vast majority of the season in the top 3, who is that we’ve released that was the firepower?
