The bad news for @tavyred is that if the far right gain power and impose economic nationalist, he's unlikely to be able to buy his cheap EV from China :( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_nationalism

Is a fair point. Perhaps there is a particular aversion to far right politics in mainland Europe. I wonder why that could be.

It was a surprise that the Covid vaccine was developed so rapidly - I recall markets liking that surprise a lot. There are many other examples.

'Them' will be the Tories. Because they'll get a shed load more seats than Reform at this election and will therefore get 4 or 5 years as the main opposition (and all the limelight that goes along with this) to rebuild their support. Plus, like them or loathe them, both Labour & Conservatives...

Yes. FTPT means that there is only ever the choice of Labour or Tory when it comes to getting a majority. Reform will demonstrate this at the election by doing phenomenally well in terms of vote share, but gaining next to no influence in parliament. That means that however low either Labour or...

FTSE has performed horribly, as you say. My post wasn't a gloating comparison against the FTSE, but to note the reaction of the markets to the far right surge. Money has a way of taking a rather objective view of things, which speaks volumes of the FTSE's paltry returns post Brexit.

I agree tbh. European stocks are quite over extended and probably need a cool off, the far right surge being a convenient narrative (show me the charts and I'll tell you the news). Doesn't dampen my belief that this new found clamour for nationalism will not be seen as bullish by the markets...

My hunch is that turning away from globalisation and towards nationalism is quite obviously bad for the economy, growth and ultimate the wealth and wellbeing of the population. But hey, on the other hand, 'sovereignty!'.

I'd contest that he's very good, but not excellent. However, I do still believe he's a man of integrity and intelligence, in politics for the right reasons. I think he'll affect positive change. What he struggles with is the politicking, which is amplified during an election campaign.
