Does that have to be the case? Argyle have beefed up theirs and they are established L1 these days.

So is this the beginning of the end of the Academy as it has been in recent years? Or just a blip?
Hope not or we will run out of money long term. Need to keep the pathway going. Isn’t that fundamental to everything.

With the obvious exception of an experienced goal keeper, I can't remember a time when the retained players list looks such a strong squad. And very pleased about Brown as I thought he only had a one year contract.
I think Rowe was a bit unlucky and probably would have been offered a new contract had we not been promoted, but I expect MT would rather put his wages towards someone proven at L1 level.

It's hardly a blip when this year has produced Pond and Chrisene and next year's crop includes Lee, Cox and several other highly rated players. Maybe the club is just re-focussing on higher quality players who the club think are more likely to make the breakthrough to the first team.

If 1 or 2 make it from each year group that will still be a massive success.

It sad for the released youngsters, but it will be much harder to break into a L1 team than L2. So it makes no sense to keep layers we don't think can do that. Plus if they don't play, no one is going to want to buy them from us, so ot not really interrupting the flow of cash from sales. Hopefully any that do make it into our team will then command a higher fee if they are sold so income overall may not be affected.
We know we haven't got a big budget for L1, so every penny we have has to be targeted at using our cash as wisely as possible.
This is a sign of decent business nous to me!

Judging MT's remarks I think we'll be in the market for a left back and maybe a left sided CB if Grounds wont sign, wouldnt rule out Key leaving and Caprice moving to the right. Central midfield is already sorted.
Goalkeeper is a given and possibly two new strikers, one a strong target man and one a proven goalscorer. Don't think Cox is ready for 1st team action yet.

WE must also as a club STOP using the term RELEASED. It is something that needs addressing in football, especially in the light of Jeremy Wisten! If your contract comes to an end, you are not released. A scholarship is no different to sixth form. You work hard in the hope you get grades to go onto University (if that's your choice). Some will make the grade, some wont.....just like football, but the school does not RELEASE you.......I'm glad to see this term not even used at Club statement - News - Scunthorpe United (scunthorpe-united.co.uk)

I would have hoped we would have been better at communicating this.

I think it’s more like GCSEs - you’re planning on staying for 6th form and it’s potentially a big blow if you’re told you haven’t made the grades so you have to go and do something else. I think that would feel like being released.
