Two things were clear yesterday. Joe White must play and Cheick looks decidedly iffy and needs further development.

Where to fit White in? And how to play without Stubbs or Diabate?

White has a sweet left foot so is best on that side. He's good enough to play in the role that Josh Key failed so spectacularly at, but we have Jevani for that.

Blackman

Key/Caprice
Sweeney
Hartridge
Sparkes/new left back/Caprice

Kite
Collins
White

Brown
Stanno
Nombe

Or with wingbacks? As above, Hartridge at CB, Grounds at LCB and Stanno on the bench

That back 4 looks ropey and slow and grounds should be nowhere near a regular starting place.

Back 3 with a new centre half although Chieck has been improving. Midfield 3 of Kite Collins and White with preferably Brown off Nombe.

No White? Is that because Caldwell rates him highly?

I agree, but it's a question of making the best of what we've got. A new experienced CB is sorely needed. Chieck was exposed time and time again yesterday against a very mediocre front line. Yes, he is improving, but needs to improve some more before he can be a regular starter in this league

I actually had forgotten about White. Brown / White if this helps. He looked very decent on his small showing yesterday and looks like he could be a huge asset.

Keep the same formation and play Key out wide instead of Sparkes and White instead of Stanno, who has had more impact on games when coming off the bench.

Playing Grounds at LCB In a back 4? You’re having a laugh mate. We would get pumped every game.

No, in a back 3 if you read it again. The two premises are, that White must play and Diabate mustn't, until he's improved. You could quite reasonably argue that a back three with Diabate would be stronger than one with Grounds. But both have their limitations

Your premises of no Stubbs or Diabate (who wasn't great but didn't play as badly as you imply) are debilitating to picking a sensible formation. No way is Grounds a starter (GC terminology) or should he play as part of a four or three his use to us is to bolster the defence further should we be onto a battering nearing the end of a match.

Most of us have stated that we need a cenner half this window and until then there is no way that we won't be picking Diabate as part of our three, unless of course Stubbs miraculously overcomes his ailments and is able to put a shift in, but he too has been excluded from your options. So with these premises I'm out.

Easy enough to fit White in with a bit of juggling so not a debate
