With the World Cup about to start and an Exeter City Academy product due to appear there, it was interesting to hear at the Senior Reds meeting last week how another City youngster might have made it to a previous Final.

It is an unusual story.

In 1993 most of the Zambian National Football team were killed in an air crash on the way to a World Cup Qualifier in Senegal. This meant a new team had to be quickly assembled. Cue a search for all available players with Zambian heritage.

That search landed in the ECFC youth set up and a young about to turn professional defender - Gary Rice. Gary had been born in Zambia while his parents worked there but had moved to England just a few months old. Gary was asked if he wanted to make himself available but declined. Gary still had hopes for England but now wonders what might have been.

Zambia went on to miss out on the 1994 World Cup by just one point. Against the odds they also reached the 1994 African Cup of Nations Final, narrowly losing to Nigeria and returning home as heroes.

Gary (centre in photo) was at the Senior Reds meeting with Richard Pears and Craig Woodman.

I think there needs to be a reality check on how low a level this is before getting too carried away. Im pleased he is rebuilding his reputation but the chance of him being a football league player again is slim
Agree. Also extremely happy to see him doing well, but it is a totally different level. He's doing well, but not exactly setting the league alight with his numbers, for instance Tyler Harvey has 18 at top of the scoring charts, but who knows if he can get a couple more hattricks he might be up there.
Maybe if Ben was a couple years younger his current form might convince a national league side to take a punt, but I think he is some way off convincing a League side to take a look at him yet.

Apart from Minhas who has 2 more league goals than Seymour the other players above him in the top scorers list all play for promotion chasing teams whereas Seymour is playing for a team who only recently climbed off the foot of the table.
Seymour has also scored 8 goals in cup games. Harvey has scored none. If the list you saw incuded cup goals Seymour and Harvey would be joint top scorers on 18.

When we offered him an extended contract he preferred to ply his trade elsewhere, and let's be honest, he hasn't exactly been a "shining beacon" of fitness in the subsequent intervening years.
