I went to Google but after 5 minutes I gave up : they give a long, complicated explanation and then, at the end, they say " and if that doesn't work.......". I have a total aversion to anything connected with IT. I thought it was supposed to make life easier. I know : I'm thick.

I don't use a Mac but the simplest way, rather than uninstalling Text Edit, should be to change the Open With default option.
This will tie your text documents to the software you prefer (eg Microsoft Word).

The best advice I could see was at the link below (has illustrations for guidance).

Essentially - 6 simple steps.
  1. Single click on your file to select it
  2. Right click to get a drop down menu
  3. Select Get Info to open the next menu
  4. Look down that menu for Open With
  5. Select your preferred text application (eg Word) from the list.
  6. This should then become the default text option for all files of that type

Hope this helps.
