His goals tend to come in bunches, do the bunches and barren spells impact on our overall form too much ?

Bowman does some great work and overall I am a fan of his however it is clearly a big concern that the only out and out striker who plays has so many games where he doesn't find the back of the net.

Earlier in the season we were OK because Randall was scoring regularly however he was always going to struggle to keep that up throughout the season, his goals have dried up and so have ours.

The vast majority of strikers score in patches. You could say exactly the same of Ollie Watkins. Only the very top strikers or those that are having a season of their career are any different.

I do agree however in your opinion is 13 out of 19 games too high a percentage for the main (only) out and out striker being played ? if we want to be successful, i.e. get promoted.

In a lot of sides if you go 3 - 5 games without a goal you are highly likely to get dropped.

For the record this isn't me having a pop at Bowman, I'd love him to be scoring in more games as I think the end result would be promotion.

I just look at the stats and think it's an interesting one.

In an ideal world you always want your strikers to be scoring consistently, especially if you want to get promoted, but it isn't the deciding factor. It is down to the team as a whole to score enough goals (and keep them out).

Our most consistent striker of recent times was Jayden Stockley. He scored 19 goals in the regular league season from 41 appearences (34+7 sub) in 2017/18 when we came fourth (4 points short). Of those appearances Jayden scored in 17 games. Out of the 24 games he didn't score in, City drew a blank 8 times resulting 6 defeats. The next top scorers were two players on 8 goals (Jake Taylor and Pierce Sweeney) and 7 (Reuban Reid). It tails off badly after that. We scored 64 goals in the league from our 46 games. It points to having a very good striker, but being a bit over reliant on him to score as a team.

So far in the league games Ryan has failed to score, City have failed to score in 1 game (0-2 v Port Vale). However the team as a whole has scored 41 goals in 20 games. Ryan and MJ have 9 each with Randall and Taylor on 6 from only 20 league games played so far. That would suggest that this team is not as reliant on Bowman's goals as we were on Stockley and are actually scoring at a significantly higher rate. This seems a better place to be in.

It points to that this team can really stuff some opposition in the right circumstances but maybe not grind three points out of closer games as well as 8 draws so far signify. Most of those draws come in the point's dropped rather than won category. But as we are rarely drawing a blank on the scoresheet, does it not suggest that the real problems are further back in the team rather than the front end. The issue at the top end of the pitch is really the lack of depth behind Ryan who can do his job equally as well, never mind better. If there is a striker out there who we can afford and is available who can do what Ryan does for the and score more consistently, of course it would be great. We wouldn't keep hold of him long though.

A lot about football at our level is timing. If we had Stockley in this team who knows where we would be in the table. But we only have players of Stockley's calibre for short periods of time for obvious reasons. If we had a centre back pairing of Storey and Moore-Taylor in this team? Or Taylor and Seaborne? It's all about assembling the best team possible, not necessarily the best individuals.

Always worth remembering that our last promotion season combined the fifth best attack and the seventh best defence and ended up in second place with a top scorer on 10 goals...that's timing ;) .

Good post.
Hopefully our new CB signing (who's currently isolating) is the partner we have been looking for to go alongside Parkes.

3 goals so far in 2021.

We have played 17 games so far in 2021, Bowman has missed 3 games due to suspension.

This isn't opinion, these are the stats / facts.

Bowman scores in patches and generally against the lesser sides in the league, although obviously he scored a hat trick v Tranmere. He's an average L2 striker in terms of scoring output and ability IMO. I have felt for some time that he's not what we need to get to the next level but for now, in the absence of any other quality attackers he has to fit the bill. In a side with more service he'd score more but you could say that about Joelinton if he joined Man City i guess.

Ryan's a funny one. He isn't a "natural" goalscorer, he can't dribble, he can't head the ball, he doesn't have a strikers instinct, he isn't going to score a spectacular goal, he has problems sorting his feet out, and yet his goals total is Ok. He can break away from a defender into space and he usually works very hard and chases lost causes.
There's no doubt that the harrying and pressing is his strength, so if he appears lazy in a game that is a big negative beside his name
