One of my most memorable games at SJP..Two teams going for it in horrendous conditions.
Mark Gall & Steve Butler were a handful for the Grecian defence that night.
The game went to Extra Time before the Grecians got the winner.
Gall was such a tricky player, plenty of pace.

The replay against Maidstone at the Park was a really wet night and tricky conditions ending in a 3-2 thriller with the rarity of a missed penalty by Dazza. I think it was the only time that season he went to the keepers left and Mark Beeney saved. Dazza still scored twice that night though.
Most games at The Park were wet and tricky between that game and the Naarwich game. Gillingham and The Chipnickers were played on a quagmire of a St James Park pitch.

And a while after. The Maidstone game in the league springs to mind.

I thought we lost 2-1 at home to Pompey in 1992. Must be getting old, memory’s going.

Think I still have some press cuttings from that Villa match. I remember Ron Atkinson going away with some Devon clotted cream! I will try and dig them out.

Indeed it was.

Exactly 35 years to the day 5/1/1986 from the game at Everton, which was unusually played on the Sunday because Liverpool were also drawn at home(against Norwich) & played on the Saturday.

The drive in through Toxteth on the A561 was a eye opener in those days, with the burnt out derelict council housing it looked like Beirut.
A really good day pre match, which was the complete opposite from my previous visit to Merseyside for a game watching the Grecians.

It was at home. Pompey fans not too happy at ex-Saint Steve Moran scoring our equaliser. Guy Whittingham came up with their winner though.

I believe it used to be a standard thing to present the visiting directors with pots of clotted cream to take home.
