Here's the place for garden tips, problems, photos and all things related.

My issue is slugs and snails. I don't like using blue pellets as I've loads of frogs in the pond and I don't want to poison them, I've got a Jack Russell so I can't have chickens and we've no hedgehogs around here.. Copper wire doesn't appear to be very effective and neither does egg shells or grit. Anyone tried nematodes ?

Egg shells work for me. Perhaps your spreading them out too thinly and they’re getting in around them?

Ants. Multiple nests on the lawn, under patio slabs. Can never get rid of them. Tried powders but they come back. Had a rat the other day As well but they seem to have disappeared now my bird feeders are empty and next door has put a rat box out to catch them.

Ants love it dry so maybe try and keep your garden watered? When we first put in a raised bed it was inundated with them but keeping it damp(ish) has kept them away.

I've got a couple of these and it seems the slugs will go in and drown themselves in beery bliss if they find the trap but they don't appear attracted to them. I've sprinkled salt around my brassicas this spring as an experiment but I've still lost half of them to slugs.

Could be. I'll try that but the little buggers are winning again at present.

The problem I have is the soil here is poor and very sandy (live a couple hundred metres from the Northam Burrows) and also live on a hill so water drains very quickly. My soil (and those gardens around me) are always dry. Always look forward to some rain. You are right about keeping it moist. It does keep them at bay, but they come back. Not sure I could afford to keep it regularly watered. They are literally everywhere. One year they started coming in the house in numbers but managed to block the entry point. I shall pray for rain and water where I can. Best I can do, I think.
