It dismally failed test a) on Saturday, a point not lost on the Hartlepool supporters that I spoke to after the game who guffawed loudly at the pathetic, tacky and inaccurate edifice that purports to be our scoreboard. A decent scoreboard, perhaps with advertising display and the capacity to rescreen goal mouth highlights would surely pay for itself very quickly?

The other thing that annoys me is that the clock stops at 90mins so if there are 5 mins added time you don't actually know unless you have set a stop watch how much time is remaining.

AFAIK all scoreboards do this - I think its a FA / FL requirement.

Not defending the scoreboard in any way, but that is also true of many of its bigger and more sw anky cousins at other grounds, including in the PL.

I think this is done so that if there is a holdup during added time the ref can add time on without the fans jumping all over him when the original added time is up.

Correct! We also asked several clubs (all B's as I recall; Bury, Blackpool & Birmingham) about the economics of getting a fully functional interactive scoreboard. The replies we got were encouraging and indicated that with the right promotion and commercial input any such scoreboard would pay for itself in 18-24 months. We're talking about at least 9 years ago, but I'm sure that the economic case still applies. We're stuck with a cruddy cheapskate E&E sponsored non-event that has no input/output flexibility at all and allows Hartlepool fans (amongst others) to scoff at it. Still, their comments about the away end facilities were not dis-similar.
