Tisdale on the Wycombe JPT Defeat: “On the whole we did pretty well”

Another cup tie and another defeat for the Grecians. Indeed the last time we won a cup tie was in this competition back in August 2011, a penalties win over Plymouth Argyle. 2-0 being the scoreline in Wycombe Wanderers favour. The bright moment was the debut of Matt Jay, who scored a hat-trick for the under 18s against Torquay United on Saturday.

Exeter City Wycombe Wanderers

04 Bennett 05 Stewart

07 Sercombe 08 Lewis
14 Doherty 22 Kretzschmar
21 Gosling 23 Arnold
32 Wheeler 28 Knott
10 Gow 18 Kuffour
25 Parkin 29 McClure
Substitutes Substitutes
30 Pym 41 Harrison
16 Dawson 25 Fletcher
29 Grimes 10 Bloomfield
18 Reid 07 Morgan
27 Jay 20 Craig

Coles, Oakley and O’Flynn were dropped/rested and Gow, Gosling and Bennett started in their stead.

Not a good game for the Grecians. Unable to get balls in to the box, Exeter lacked any fire power. Wanderers harried and hassled the Exeter players, and looked more keen on the game that the City players did. Goals on 30 minutes and 83 minutes for Wycombe meant that they will go through to the 2nd round.

Paul Tisdale on the match said:-

We tried to play football tonight. The opposition’s game was about lining us up, tackling hard, counter-attacking, and not letting us play – basically working very hard off the ball.  I think they did it to the maximum and I think they did extremely well in what they set out to do, and you have to give them credit for that.

We did okay – no-one played badly and on the whole we did pretty well.  But we all know and everyone will know that we didn’t have enough product and we didn’t threaten the goal enough.  It’s disappointing because it’s a home game against a team we should fancy ourselves against.

Matt Jay on his debut said:-

I really enjoyed it. Obviously it was a bit different to playing for the youth team, but it was a pleasure and an honour to play. It was much different – I’m not sure how many fans there were, but it was certainly a lot more than I’ve had at any of my under-18s games!
I like to get on the ball, have a turn and maybe run at someone – I’m quite attacking-minded.  I think that’s the best way to play, and it’s definitely my way of playing.  That’s what fans like to see, and that’s what I was put in the team for, so I gave it my best go.

Anthony Stewart told wwfc.com said:-

“I didn’t actually expect to get on it, but you have to gamble in the box and that’s what I did. We had the mindset where we wanted to come out and do well from the start and keep our winning run going – that’s what we’ve done.

I’d always prefer a clean sheet over a goal. Goals are nice, but clean sheets count for more.
