Preview: Exeter City vs Swindon Town

City’s unbeaten run came to an end on Friday night, although Matt Taylor can take heart from the performance, and a hectic month continues with an opportunity to get back into the promotion places albeit against a fellow promotion chaser with a phenomenal away record. As expected Cheick Diabate missed the Mansfield match, his place taken by Jonathan Grounds, while Jevani Brown’s knock against Bristol Rovers also ruled him out. Brown could be in line to return, while Taylor suddenly has an embarrassment of riches up front with Offrande Zanzala fit again to compete with Sam Nombe and Kieran Phillips and with Padraig Amond close to a return.

In the month since City snatched a late win at the County Ground, Swindon have picked up 12 points from a possible 15 although three of their wins were against sides struggling near the bottom and the other was against a woefully short of form Bradford on Saturday – that win was the Robins’ tenth on the road this season, a record that has kept them firmly in the promotion picture. Harry McKirdy has continued his fine form and now has 17 goals in all competitions, while Aston Villa loanee Louie Barry has notched three since joining in January.

That win in February came when Swindon took the lead in the second half through Tomlinson only for City to do what they have done so often this season and come back to win late on, with goals in minutes 84 and 88 from Brown and Dieng. Swindon’s last visit to the Park was in August 2019 when the sides drew 1-1 – City took the lead through Jay only for the prolific Eoin Doyle to equalise in the last minute. Swindon still enjoy a healthy league head to head lead with 37 wins to City’s 26, 26 matches also finishing level.
