The EFL thought moving to Bangkok for the first draw would be a good idea. The coverage of the draw soon turned to farce when first the sound didn’t work, then it froze for everyone after the first team, Birmingham, was drawn. The new sponsors Carabao are based in Thailand where they make an energy drink.

To add to the confusion, the graphics showed Charlton both away to Exeter and at home to Cheltenham. It was then clarified that Oxford will be hosting Cheltenham Town, and Charlton Athletic will indeed be travelling to St James Park.

The ties will be played in week commencing 7th August. With prior agreement with the EFL Newport’s tie with Southend will be swapped to Roots Hall, while Rodney Parade gets a brand new pitch laid.
