Next Up: Exeter City v Dagenham and Redbridge

After a mini-slump of four straight defeats that finally extinguished any faint hopes of promotion, City will hope to end the season on a positive note with a visit of another side who, on the strength of pre-season predictions, will have been happy with a mid-table finish. Christian Ribeiro and Lee Holmes were once again missing from the Hartlepool defeat and will hope to recover in time to take the field, alex_byrne_thumbwhile a number of other players will be desperate to play if only to impress Paul Tisdale enough to earn a new contract. On the other hand the somewhat meaningless nature of this fixture may lead to the sort of youthful side seen last season at Hartlepool, meaning the likes of Connor Riley-Lowe, Matt Jay and Jamie Reid could feature. There may even be a place in the squad for one or more of the youth players recently offered deals, such as Alex Byrne or Cameron Gill.

At the turn of the year it appeared that Wayne Burnett’s Dagenham & Redbridge side would face a battle for survival, having registered just six wins. However, the Daggers have turned the corner and been much improved in the second half of the season, ensuring they kept well clear of trouble and indeed go into the final Saturday knowing that a win would see them finish in the top half, a magnificent achievement once more for a club that appears to operate on a shoestring. The key to their success is well known to City supporters, 39 year old Jamie Cureton continues to bely his age with 19 goals in all competitions. Other players to look out for will be Scottcureton_thumb Doe in defence and Andre Boucaud in midfield. One name definitely not appearing on the team sheet will be Joss Labadie, whose season ended early for the second successive year due to him taking the phrase “hungry player” literally and biting a chunk out of an opponent.

Matches between the sides are usually entertaining so it should be a good way to end the season. The reverse fixture saw City notch up their fourth straight 2-1 win – Cureton (who else?) put the Daggers ahead in the first half before City seized the initiative as the hosts tried to kill the game with a penalty from Jimmy Keohane before an injury time header from Arron Davies secured the points. City have a very strong record in league head to heads with eight wins to the Daggers’ two (seven draws).
