Ryan Harley in Football League’s Team of the Weekend

An excellent Easter weekend for the Grecians, with maximum points earned, it was inevitable that at least one Exeter City player would have been honoured by the Football League in their weekly team of the week presentation. This week’s was for a contribution over 2 the two Easter games.

First-up for the Grecians was a visit to Kenilworth Road and an opposition sitting in a play-off place but struggling for form. After giving the Hatters a 2-0 start, the luton_exeter_thumbGrecians took the second half by storm. A deflected chip by Matt Oakley was beautifully volleyed into the net by Ryan Harley. The comeback was on! A striker’s strike by defender Jordan Moore-Taylor made it 2-2 and then deep into added time Exeweb sponsored David Wheeler prodded in a header from Ribeiro that hit the post and landed kindly at the feet of Wheeler for a 3-2 win for the Grecians and importantly 3 points for their play-off challenge.

Easter Monday saw another play-off challenger arriving at St James Park, in the guise of Newport County. All evens at half-time with the Exiles having the better chances the second half was set-up for the team who could break the deadlock first. That honour went to Exeter and again Wheeler proved pivotal. Having been put through by Clinton Morrison Wheeler gave Exeter a 1-0 lead on 77 minutes. This was then followed up just before full time, with Wheeler being tripped in the box. Yakubu was dismissed for the foul by referee Gavin Ward, and Ryan Harley coolly slotted the resulting penalty in to the bottom left of the net. A 2-0 win for the Grecians and maximum points earned over Easter and their unbeaten run extended to eight games.
