There has been a discussion within the Exeter Exiles community about the future funding for players for Exeter City.

In the past the fund has paid for the wages of youngsters such as James Norwood (now with Forest Green Rovers), Callum McNish (now with Oxford City) and for the last 2 seasons Elliott Chamberlain. With Chamberlain being released and now signed for Gloucester City – see here – there is funding available for a new player.

Much of the discussion among the fund providers is the frustration that none of the players that the 1931 fund have helped has made a permanent move to the first team, no new ‘Tony Kellows’ in a way.graham_cummins1931_feat

For the 2014/15 season there may well be a variation from previous seasons for the fund. Instead of funding a youngster that might not have had a contract with the Grecians, the fund have been having a discussion about part-funding an older player.

However, no names had been released, but we know that Graham Cummins, a striker on loan from Preston North End to Rochdale last season, has trained at the Cat & Fiddle training ground. In exeter_torquay_teamsheet020814the Torquay United friendly today (Saturday 2 August) he wore the number 31 shirt. So, it seems that potentially he is the new 1931 player. Cummins was released at the end of last season by Preston.

The Club, however, are under a transfer embargo so no new signings until that loan is paid off which is expected to be in within the next few weeks.

Cummins scored against Exeter in the League 2 away fixture last November. The Irish-born player, 26, has played 70 first team games, scoring 9 goals for Rochdale and Preston North End.

Just the one issue that remains for the player. Cummins was arrested in April in relation to an investigation in to betting. To our knowledge this has not yet been resolved and we can;t find any more information. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/two-ex-tranmere-players-including-former-6922273 ** Update** Cummins and the other Preston players have been released from the bail – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-28490777
