Danny Butterfield signs for Exeter City

On Saturday, Exeter City announced that they have signed a right back, Danny Butterfield, aged 33.

Butterfield was released by Carlisle last month having played 2 games for them. Gregg Abbott had this to say about Danny:-

He knows the game inside out. Danny has played consistently well at a high level. SJP_tunnel_viewHe has that bit of knowledge and experience. We invited him up and he has been extremely bright and positive from the moment he got here. He’s a strong character and he’s already fitted in with the group.

Greg Abbott then released him a couple of weeks later. Just before Greg himself got released!

Danny Butterfield came through as a trainee with Grimsby and made 124 appearances for the Mariners before moving on a free to Crystal Palace.  He moved up the leagues with Palace including playing a number of game for them in the Premiership. He then dropped down to League 1 with Southampton and playing in the Championship for them. On promotion to the Premiership he went on loan to Bolton.

In all Butterfield has played in all 492 times, and scored 14 goals. Butterfield talking to the Club’s official site said of his move:-

I got a call from Tis last Saturday hoping to meet me on Sunday, which we did. We had a quick a chat and obviously he liked what he heard from me, and likewise I liked his philosophy on football. So it was a no-brainer for me to come here and sign.Paul Tisdale (thumb)

Tis likes his teams to play football; he likes the game played in the right way. His work ethic was important too – he wants the lads to put demands on each other’s standards every day, and that’s something that I put on myself anyway.

A big part is that Tis has been here for a number of years. It’s a very stable club and a stable working environment under Tis. On my first impressions, I’m very excited to work here.
